13 steps to potty training

1. First off, make certain that the puppy is always kept in a safe place when left by itself. Most people utilize a kennel for this task. The perfect size kennel is one that is large enough to lie down in comfortably, and one in which the puppy can stand up and turn around. There are two aspects to the reasoning behind this - the puppy needs sufficient room but not so much that it can find a place to defecate or urinate in the crate. We don't want the puppy going to the bathroom in the crate if we can help it. The most important part here is to ensure they are in an area that they won't soil.

2. During this most important time it is imperative that the puppy is never allowed free reign in the house. You must make certain that they are under your supervision when out of their crate. Part of the training process is catching them in the act so that you can respond quickly by interrupting them as you pick them up and take them outside.

3. Que phrases are a great way to go, as long as used in the right place and time. For instance, when interrupting the puppy you can use the que word "outside", and once you have taken the puppy out to the area you want the to eliminate use a phrase such as "Go pee", "do your numbers", or "potty". Never use the outdoor phrase in the house when you are trying to interrupt them, as this would cause your puppy confusion.

4. make certain that rewarding and praising are given when they do the deed outside. Have treats on you and give a lot of praise when they do as you have requested.

5. If the puppy has an indoor accident, it could confuse your puppy; consequently you must keep an eye on the puppy whenever he is out of his crate. This means 100% of the time when outside of the crate. You might even need to make use a leash indoors for the first little while to keep them from wandering off.

6. If you discover an accident, consider it YOUR own fault, and not the puppys. Never punish for this.

7. When cleaning up puppy's accidents be sure to use a good odor eliminator, such as Natures Miracle. Not only will this product help clean the soiled area, but it will help remove all scent traces of the soiling, which is important to keep the puppy from soiling the area again.

8. Diet is rarely considered, however a good quality food coupled with a healthy dog will ensure he has no reason for abnormal elimination and this will go a long way to help the training process.

9. A consistent feeding and watering schedule in which you will allow for time to go out to the potty area before cratinge them for extended periods of time is important.

10. When you are home, its best to take the puppy to the potty area at least every hour or so. It is important not to just turn the puppy out, but to make sure you accompmny the dog because it is important that you ar there to give positive feedback when the puppy does his business as he is being taught.

11. It takes about 16 weeks for a puppy to really start getting full bladder control; because of this, don't keep the puppy waiting in the crate for long periods of time. If they are forced to hold it for to long they will eventually go. This too, is not the puppy's fault.

12. Expand the acceptable play area of smaller dogs more slowly than that of larger dogs. Smaller dogs see the house a larger area as areas to eliminate that are away from where they sleep, play or just hang out.

13. Although dogs can hold it for 8 hours during the night does not mean that they should be kept waiting 8 hours between bathroom visits. When they are sleeping, their metabolism slows down and allows them to hold it for the night, much the same happens when you leave them for 8 hours when you go to work as they most likely spend most of that time sleeping. When you are home you should be taking them out almost hourly.

Done correctly you can be very successful at potty training puppies; some may take longer than others. Providing proper supervision to minimize accidents and properly cleaning up any messes that do happen in the house will ensure a successful house broken pup. mfu
